Postcards From Africa

You are to imagine that you are traveling in and experiencing sub-Saharan Africa and sending home five different postcards. You are also to prepare a map of the continent to show your family and friends the places you are visiting and your route.

GUIDELINES

  • You will have one postcard in each of five categories:
    • Physical Feature Choose any specific physical feature of sub-Saharan Africa it must be identified by name. See your textbook for ideas.
    • Culture Choose a specific feature of a particular African culture, such as clothing, dwelling, ceremony, etc.. Note you must identify the group/tribe whose cultural feature you select. Here you may want to start by looking at a particular group, or by finding a picture and learning more about what it is showing.
    • Leader Select an African leader of the past or present who has had a significant impact, positive or negative, in his/her country or on the continent as a whole. Some examples are: Mandela, Kenyatta, Houphouet-Boigny, Nkrumah, or Babangida. You are not limited to these, however.
    • Current News Pick a current situation in an African country. It may be a problem or a success. News web sites such as CNN, ABC News, Time or Newsweek might be helpful, or at least a good place to start.
    • Wildlife Select a creature of African wildlife, preferable one that is endangered. You may have a favorite animal in mind and want to start there or you may want to check out the web sites of environmental organizations. I have put a link to a directory of environmental organizations dealing with endangered species in Africa in the "Favorite Links" page on my web site
  • Each postcard must be from a DIFFERENT COUNTRY in Africa. For example, if you choose Nelson Mandela (He is from South Africa) for your leader postcard, you may not choose a current news story dealing with South Africa and, no other postcard may deal with South Africa either.
  • POSTCARD PARTICULARS
    • Cards may be 4"x6" or 5"x8" only Smaller or larger cards will not be accepted. You may cut cardboard, card stock or oak tag to size or use unlined index cards.
    • Each card should have an appropriate picture on one side, preferably in color I suggest that you copy and paste a picture from the internet. It is the easiest way. If you do not know how to do this, ask me for help. Be careful resizing pictures. You do not want to distort the image. (Do not use thumbnail images. They are not big enough). The picture should fill the entire side of the postcard. It is best to print the picture directly onto your card by running it through the printer. It is much neater than pasting it on.
    • On the back of the card you must have printed (from the computer):
    • a brief caption for the picture with a date if appropriate
    • the location from which you are writing (city and country)
    • a greeting
    • a message with important information about the subject (This is the most important part of the project!) It should be written in the first person in a style in which you would use when writing a postcard to someone. DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT CUTTING AND PASTING CONTENT FROM THE INTERNET HERE.
    • a closing and signature
    • a name and address to which it is being sent (Be sure to include the country to which you are sending it in the address.)
    • I have created a template in Microsoft Word for a 4x6 card. If you would like a copy of it, just e-mail me and I will send it to you. Be aware that the template is in columns and a line will appear dividing the sides for message and address as you type information into the document.
  • You must fill out the planning worksheet for the project. (Distributed in class) It is due by Thursday, October 17th for approval. You should not create your postcards until your planning sheet has been approved. You will receive a grade out of ten points for the planning sheet.
  • For the map begin by going to the "Favorite Links" section on my web page, select and print one of the outline maps of Africa. You may choose one with or without the countries labeled. On this map, indicate the five locations from your postcards. Color the map carefully, highlighting the five locations. Then draw a line (using a straight edge) from one location to the next in the order in which you would travel. (For extra credit, you may also include separate maps of the five countries visited. Color them and be sure to indicate the city from which you are writing the postcard.)
  • The completed project is due FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25th
  • Make sure that your name appears on each card, especially if you do not sign the card with your own name.
  • Submit your cards and map clipped together or together in an envelope with your name on it.
  • Each card will be worth 20 points for a total of 100 points, and the map will be worth an additional 20 points
